A man died after an officer-involved shooting on Friday, Sept. 22, in the Banning area, the Morongo Band of Mission Indians said in a statement released Friday.
At approximately 5:45 a.m. on Friday, Morongo Tribal Police officers and a deputy from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the 12000 block of Santiago Road after a dead body was reported inside the house.
An armed resident confronted the authorities upon arrival, and an officer-involved shooting occurred involving a Morongo Tribal Police officer, Friday’s news release said.
The resident, a man in his 50s, was fatally wounded in the shooting and pronounced dead at the scene, while no authorities were injured, the Morongo police said.
Authorities found no evidence of a dead body and determined the reported call false. They did find a suicide note at the home.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave, and their name will not be released, according to Friday’s news release.
Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office assumed the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
The identity of the person fatally shot was not immediately released to the public.
Anyone with information related to the investigation was encouraged to contact Investigator Dan Moody at 760 393-3525.
