Putting your phone in aeroplane mode

No matter how indispensable you may think you are, that you aren’t is a wonderful feeling that’s driven home when you’re on a flight with your phone on ‘Aeroplane mode‘. Even if many planes now provide you the option of ‘staying connected’ when in the air, treat that as a ball and chain, not a luxury.

In an era of ceaseless digital engagement, where every spare moment is tethered to a glowing screen, the respite offered by a flight without phone connectivity is like kicking your shoes off and putting your legs up. And the best part is that turning your phone to ‘Aeroplane mode’ – or even off – during a flight is acceptable professional and social behaviour. Only worker ants would take pleasure in not grabbing this hours-long bliss with both hands.

The absence of phone connectivity is your option to be aristocratic for a few hours. It disconnects you from the relentless stream of notifications, emails and social media updates. It is liberation that allows you to gaze out of the window, dive into a good book, or take that day nap you only dream about at night. Most importantly, it reminds you that what you believe to be a ‘must’ can be a ‘may’.
