I’m a camping pro… here’s the 3 mistakes holidaymakers make when pitching a tent that can ruin your night

A CAMPING expert has revealed the three mistakes people make when pitching their tent that could ruin their night.

YouTube star Dan Becker took to his social media page to tell his 353,000 subscribers what holidaymakers could be doing wrong.

He said that simply getting ready for a camping trip is “already a tonne of work” so the last thing you want is something to go wrong when you’re at the site.

Dan said: “A big mistake I see a lot of campers make is not realising the elevation of the campsite that they’re choosing.

“So, sometimes they could chose a location that is too low, as in maybe a valley or something low just off of the trail.

“Or sometimes they pick a location that is simply too high.

“You don’t really want to do either of those.

“You want to pick somewhere in the middle and the reason for that is if you pick a location that is too low, what can happen is, at night, cold air will come in and can potentially settle down in that valley or low area and it can make that night a lot colder than you thought.

“The other problem is sometimes campers will pick an elevation which is way too high. The problem with that is what if there’s a storm? What if there’s a lot of high winds coming through?

“You could be setting yourself up for some serious danger.”

Another common mistake new campers made, Dan said, was setting up camp or your hammock where there was dangerous things that could potentially fall on them at night.

He said: “So when you get to your camp, you want to look up for anything that could potentially fall on you, like a dead tree or a dead branch.

In the footage he gave an example where he had set up a hammock between two trees in a wooden area.

Standing where he had pitched up, there was now a fallen tree right where his hammock had been.

Dan added: “Had I been sleeping here at night, it wouldn’t have been the best thing, for me in the middle of the night.”

Another huge mistake he saw new campers make was when they get to camp and start setting up they realise this is the first time they have actually set up their gear.

Dan said: “Big mistake. You definitely don’t want this to be the place where you try or test out your gear.

“I mean, you’re not going to have any data signal so how are you going to connect to the internet to get me to help you on YouTube. It’s not going to happen.

“You might be in a situation you might be fighting the dark, you might be fighting a rain storm that’s coming.

“You might have forgotten to bring things the instructions told you to bring. It’s just a terrible idea.”

He advised to set up at home in your back garden “before you even think about going out on your camping trip.”

Elsewhere, another camping expert David Scotland has also revealed his list of the biggest mistakes campers make.

Meanwhile, these camping etiquette mistakes will make other campers hate you.
