London has been named one of the top ten safest cities in the world for visitors in 2024 in a new survey.

The big city has a reputation for high crime rates and gang violence.

But it is still considered by many foreign travellers one of the safest places to visit.

Fifteen cities made up the list, which was unveiled by US insurance company Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.

The report analysed crime data and asked tourists to rank each city according to how safe and security they felt when visiting.

Data included violent crime, terrorism, safety and healthcare for women, safety for people of colour and LGBTQ+ people.

Experts said they researched dozens of cities and narrowed down the 31 most popular.

They said: “For each of the last four years we’ve created a list of the World’s Safest Cities for travel. A lot has changed in travel since then, but thankfully, many of the world’s safest cities haven’t.

“Many cities that American travellers considered safe at the height of the pandemic are still considered safe today.

“As part of the survey process we ask respondents if they’ve actually visited any of these cities, and only travellers who have actually been to the cities are allowed to rank them on a variety of safety measures, using their first-hand knowledge as a yardstick.”

Honolulu and Montreal topped the list followed by Reykjavik and the Australian city of Sydney – with the British capital ranking in eighth place.

Asian cities performed well in the research, with Japanese capital Tokyo and South Korean capital Seoul all featuring in the the list.

European destinations Paris, Berlin and Barcelona also made the cut.

And Orlando in Florida, US, came on last place.

Despite being an attractive city for many, London’s crime rate has spiked in recent years – with

The Office for National Statistics said that 12,786 knife offences were carried out in the capital over the span of 12 months to the end of March this year.

It has surged compared to 11,031 for the same period a year earlier – representing an increase of 16 per cent.

However, London ranks third when it comes to knife crime across the country.

With the Metropolitan police recording 137 instances of knife crime last year.

It comes as the world’s safest cities to visit were revealed – and only two European ones were in the top ten.

Tokyo was named the world’s safest city on Thursday by the Economist Intelligence Unit, in an index ranking cities’ ability to handle everything from climate disasters to cyber attacks.

Only two cities in Europe made the top ten – Amsterdam and Copenhagen.
