Hemet’s new Gibbel Park Skate Plaza was abuzz with skateboarders Friday afternoon, Dec. 15.
The project came about after a 2018 community engagement study showed residents’ desire for a skate park, according to a Hemet news release. The $2.2 million project, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, broke ground in March.
The park’s features include concrete bowls, a rail, grind ledge, stairs, seating and landscaping, the release states, as well as safety features like lighting, fencing and security cameras — including a live cam.
“In our vision for Gibbel Park, our foremost priority was safety and enjoyment for all families,” Mayor Joe Males said in the release.
City spokesperson Alan Reyes wrote in a Tuesday, Dec. 12 email that people have been skating “from dawn to dusk” since the park opened.
The recent grand opening included pro skateboarders, sessions for beginners and giveaways from Hemet’s Codex Skate Shop.
The park is open from 6 a.m. to dusk daily, except from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Tuesdays when it’s closed for maintenance, according to the city’s website.
