Jose Mourinho has revealed insight into Manchester United’s ‘deep, deep problems’ during his two-and-a-half-year spell as manager.

Mourinho took the job at Old Trafford in May 2016 and led the team to glory in the Europa League and Carabao Cup before he was sacked in December 2018.

He also guided United to a runner-up finish in the Premier League, although he hopes it will be upgraded to a title due to Manchester City’s 115 FFP charges.

Mourinho was recently linked with a second stint at United but he has rubbished those reports in an interview with Rio Ferdinand on his VIBE with FIVE podcast.

Instead, Mourinho has opened up about the problems at United during his time as boss.

Mourinho regularly clashed with Paul Pogba at United, branding the Frenchman ‘a virus’ in front of his teammates and stripping him of the vice-captaincy.

Speaking about the issues he faced, Mourinho said: ‘Do you buy new furniture units before cleaning the house? I was more about cleaning the house than buying new furniture (signings).

‘We didn’t clean it the way we wanted. I wanted to clean from the second season and we couldn’t for different reasons.

‘I cannot say that I was asking for A, B, C or D in the third season because that was not right. I just knew clearly by the third season what I didn’t want there.

‘In terms of the individuals, in terms of the profiles, I knew clearly what I didn’t want, but it didn’t happen. Sometimes in football, you have to accept that.

‘I tried my best but I knew exactly the deep, deep problems that we had there. In my third season, the manifestation of these problems was more and more clear.’
