Rasmus Hojlund talks up his Manchester United finish: ‘That was such a good goal’

Rasmus Hojlund says there is no question that his second goal against Luton Town on Sunday was intentional, despite it being a very unorthodox finish.

The 21-year-old scored both Red Devils goals in a 2-1 win at Kenilworth Road, making it five wins on the spin in all competitions.

The Dane also made it goals in six consecutive Premier League matches, hitting a superb run of form after a slow start to his career at Old Trafford.

Hojlund’s first goal was a calm finish as he rounded the goalkeeper, while his second was an unusual goal, coming from a mis-hit Alejandro Garnacho strike.

The Denmark international diverted the ball into the corner of the goal by turning his body and flicking Garnacho’s effort home with his chest and shoulder.

It looked intentional and Hojlund put any doubts to bed by insisting that he entirely meant the finish and had even been training on his shoulder work.

‘Yeah 100 per cent,’ Hojlund told Sky Sports on whether his finish was intentional. ‘You can see it, I turn my body and flick it in.

‘I was surprised. That was such a good goal, to be fair. I’ve actually tried to train up, not finish like this, but shoulders you know when you do kick-ups and juggle a little bit with the ball. Also at the moment I have a lot of confidence, so it goes in.’

Hojlund’s seven Premier League goals have all come in the last six games, having gone 14 in the top flight before he scored his first.

‘No, I never doubted myself,’ he said. ‘But of course you can be a little bit down when you’re not scoring in the Premier League. especially when you’re that young and the expectation is that high.

‘But I always believe in myself to score a lot of goals. I scored in the Champions League as well. I knew it was just a matter of time, keep working on my finishing, my confidence, learning my teammates, getting the understanding of where to position myself.’

Erik ten Hag appears to have settled on a front three of Hojlund flanked by Marcus Rashford and Garnacho, with Bruno Fernandes behind them and the Dane feels there is a bright future ahead.

‘It’s quality players,’ he said. ‘I play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. It’s quality players I train and play with every day. I just want to keep playing with them, get even better, hopefully they can get better and we grow together.

‘It was massive today, closing the gap to Spurs who lost some points as well and Villa and Spurs have each other next. We need to keep pushing, it’s our target to get Champions League football and go as far in the FA Cup as well. It’s very important for us to win trophies and we will do everything possible to go and win everything.’
