Boss Stuart Maynard says he was “embarrassed” by Notts County’s 4-3 home defeat by League Two bottom side Sutton United.
The Magpies were booed off at Meadow Lane after suffering a fifth defeat in six games.
Notts have picked up just four points from a possible 21 since Maynard replaced head coach Luke Williams, who left for the Swansea job in January.
“It’s a performance I’m not proud of,” Maynard told BBC Radio Nottingham.
“It’s a performance as a whole where I feel embarrassed. It was a really frustrating evening.”
Defeat saw Notts, a side that were top of the table in October, slip to 14th – where they remain four points adrift of the play-off spots.
On three occasions, the Magpies battled back to level against Sutton but they could not find a way to salvage anything from the game after Charlie Lakin’s penalty gave the visitors the lead for the fourth time late on.
“We got ourselves back in the game but we ended up killing ourselves, it was a really poor performance,” said Maynard, who left National League side Wealdstone and gave up his job as a part-time telecommunications engineer to take over at the Magpies.
“It’s the first time since we have been here as a management team that I can say the performance level wasn’t good enough.
“I think we have a group of lads that run about and give everything, but when you keep making the errors that we are making, it’s just not good enough and that’s where we are at.”
Notts supporters made their frustrations clear with jeers at full-time, and Maynard says he “accepts that”.
Magpies captain Kyle Cameron was also seen exchanging words with fans after the match.
The defender took to social media on Wednesday to say he was “not arguing” but “simply saying that in times like these we know it’s not good enough”.
“I don’t think anyone enjoyed it, and they deserve to show their frustration,” Maynard added.
“I take it on the chin.”
Notts next travel to fellow mid-table side Bradford City on Saturday.
