This 8 March, we open the doors of our headquarters so you can meet Lydia, Isa, Cristina and Belinda, four of the STEAM women who work in that part of Meteored that cannot be seen and that is everything.
At Meteored, one of our purposes as a company is to equalise the quotas of men and women who develop technical or scientific careers. Our dream come true would be that one day, when publishing a job offer aimed at scientific and computer science profiles, we would receive the same number of CVs from men as from women, but we are still very far from that.
More STEAM women: the goal of Meteored
To change it and get closer to the goal, we have long set out to do what we can to make women visible in STEAM careers (from English: science, technology, engineering, arts and maths), generating references for the new generations. The objective is that today’s girls do not believe that they are not bright enough to achieve the goal they set for themselves, something that is happening according to various studies, and that they do not feel discouraged by the stereotypes and prejudices that still condition them today.
Within the framework of this purpose, this 8 March, International Women’s Day, we have interviewed four of the women who make up the Meteored team. We have asked them about their work, their academic and professional path and the obstacles they have encountered in it. The result is a video in which our colleagues show how much we have advanced, but also the enormous challenges that we continue to face.
Lydia, Isabel, Belinda and Cristina, inspiring examples
Lydia Gascó, Isabel Martínez and Belinda González are computer engineers, and they work in various departments carrying out developments that improve the functionalities of our product, and which later reach users through web portals or the app. Cristina Chuecos is a graphic designer, and responsible for the design department at Meteored, the coherence of the brand depends on her, as well as the entire visual part of the product.
“When it comes to finding a job, in interviews, there are questions that are asked because you are a woman.” Isabel Martínez, web developer at Meteored.
Throughout the interviews, it becomes clear that, in the branch of computer engineering, women continue to be a large minority, while in other fields, such as graphic design, despite this being the case at the beginning of the discipline, has been reversing until reaching equal quotas. The lack of references is another of the common points in the experiences of our colleagues, who did not have any female figure to inspire them, at least not in a close and tangible way.
Actions aimed at the root of the problem
Various studies carried out not only in Spain, but also in other Western countries such as the United Kingdom or the United States, show that the problem of the low representation of women in STEAM careers has nothing to do with science not being attractive to girls. Young people, at some point begin to believe that they will not be able to achieve their goal.
That is why we are committed to generating close references to inspire new generations. At Meteored we want young women to see themselves reflected in our colleagues, who are real people, who have studied in similar schools or institutes and come from social realities comparable to theirs and who therefore send the clear message that it is possible.
