RISHI Sunak last night led calls for a swift investigation after British nationals are reported to have been killed in an airstrike in Gaza.
The Prime Minister has called on an urgent investigation after seven workers from World Central Kitchen died.
Reports suggest that three British nationals were among those who died, along with an Australian, Polish national, a Palestinian and American-Canadian dual citizen.
Mr Sunak said: “We are asking Israel to investigate what happened urgently, because clearly there are questions that need to be answered.”
“My thoughts are with their friends and family. They are doing fantastic work bringing alleviation to the suffering that many are experiencing in Gaza.
“They should be praised and commended for what they are doing. They need to be allowed to do that work unhindered and it is incumbent on Israel to make sure they can do that.”
Foreign Office staff were scrambling to verify reports that British nationals were among the aid workers who were killed.
Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron demanded a “full, transparent explanation” of what happened when a convoy was hit.
He added: “These were people who were working to deliver life-saving aid to those who desperately need it.
“It is essential that humanitarian workers are protected and able to carry out their work.”
It was leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse after unloading more than 100 tonnes of humanitarian food taken to Gaza through the maritime route.
The aid staff were travelling in two armoured cars with WCK branding.
Alicia Kearns, chair of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee, said: “Humanitarian agencies must be given the assurances they need that their people will be protected.”
