Phil Foden doesn’t think another top-flight side will ever be able to match Manchester City if they make it four straight Premier League title wins in a row on Sunday. Speaking before tonight’s Football Writers’ Association awards’ ceremony, where he was crowned the Footballer of the Year, Foden promised Pep Guardiola’s side would be giving ‘everything’ to beat West Ham at the Etihad. Victory would ensure the title irrespective of how Arsenal get on at home to Everton.
Asked about the potential of winning a league and FA Cup double, the 23-year-old replied: “It would mean everything to me after finishing last season and what we achieved then.
“We’re still in two competitions, we’ve got two finals left and we’ll give everything to try and achieve success and try and do the Premier League four times which has never been done before. It would mean a lot to us. It’s history and I don’t think I can ever see it being done again.
“It’s something the team knows, the team understands and we’re looking forward to trying to get it done. If we can win these next two finals then go into the tournament (Euro 2024) full of confidence.”
Foden was unable to attend the ceremony in London, but also sent a video message where he thanked everyone who voted for him. He took 42 per cent of the vote from football journalists, finishing ahead of Arsenal’s Declan Rice and City team-mate Rodri.
Foden’s win made it a City double, with Bunny Shaw picking up the Women’s Footballer of the Year award. And it followed a campaign where the England international has scored a season-best 25 goals for his club.
“I feel like I have put a lot of hard work into this season, I’ve tried to give everything in every performance that I’ve played in and I feel like my game has come on massively this year,” he added. “I’m delighted with how I’m performing and now it’s one last push on Sunday, one more game to go to try and win the league and I’m really delighted with the performances and how the team has been doing as well.”
Despite his age, Foden has already been touted to surpass the record haul of Ryan Giggs in terms of a British player winning major silverware. The England forward already has five Premier League titles, as well as two FA Cup and four League Cup wins to his name.
Outside of England, Foden also owns winners’ medals for the Champions League, European Super Cup, and FIFA World Club Cup. He has also already been capped 33 times by England.
