Inside Brockton High School, there are 4,000 Yondr cellphone pouches stored in a secure location waiting to be distributed to students on the first day of school. The Brockton School Committee approved a new cellphone policy in March that requires all high school students to lock their phones in a Yondr pouch during school, which they would store in their lockers or backpacks.

Massachusetts State Police and Brockton Police arrested 22 and charged 37 people on Wednesday as part of an ongoing investigation into street-level opiate sales within the city of Brockton, Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz said in a written statement. From May to July of this year, state and city law enforcement agencies from numerous divisions conducted a joint investigation as part of the 2024 Brockton Opiate Suppression Initiative to address issues related to opiate and narcotic distribution activities, violence, quality of life offenses and related crimes in Brockton.

A rare occurrence: Lightning strike possibly causes fire at condominium complex in Easton
A lightning strike was the possible cause of a fire at a condominium complex in Easton on Sunday night, Fire Chief Justin Alexander said in a written statement. The fire occurred during a thunderstorm at a condominium complex located at 30 Pinebrook Lane shortly before 8 p.m., officials said. A rare occurrence, lightning strikes cause approximately 35 out of every 15,000 building fires each year in Massachusetts, according to Jake Wark, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services.

Brockton Hospital about to reopen after devastating fire. When and what’s still closed
The Brockton area gets one of its hospitals back on Tuesday, Aug. 13. Brockton Hospital, owned by Signature Healthcare, has been mostly closed since a 10-alarm fire and evacuation on Feb. 7, 2023. The blaze caused little visible damage, but it destroyed the electrical system. The reopening means that for the first time in 553 days, Brockton will have two emergency departments. Aug. 13 completes the planned three-phase reopening. Three hospital programs will remain closed, however: the maternity unit, the pediatric unit and the behavioral health unit.
