As Nevis School readies for the new school year, the school board met on Monday, Aug. 26.
Principal Brian Michaelson reported that four new teachers met with their mentors at an Aug. 21 workshop.
The all-staff meeting on Monday was “a very good kickoff,” he said.
Training will start for the READ Act. Michaelson said It will involve 51 hours of training for 51 staff members.
Student representatives Grace McNamee and Adeline Bjorklund announced that Homecoming Week will be Sept. 9-13, the second week of school. Coronation of homecoming royalty will be at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 9.
McNamee reported that she was accepted to sit on the Student Advisory and Leadership Team (SALT). According to the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) website, “SALT is a student-led advocacy group that will advise the MSHSL staff and its board of directors and create leadership training and development opportunities for students in Minnesota.”
The main purposes of SALT is to communicate the needs and challenges facing today’s student participants; identify best practices for coaches and advisors and develop leadership skills.
“We discussed our upcoming regional conferences that we’re holding and getting those organized,” McNamee said. “The one that Nevis will probably be attending is in Bemidji on Dec. 3 and it’s with a bunch of schools in our area. It’s about leadership and other necessary components for being student athletes.”
Board chair Andy Lindow asked how she was selected for SALT.
McNamee said her mom, Jennifer, saw it on Facebook, so she applied. “I did it last year and this is the second year,” Grace noted.
Board member Tara Wolff was absent.
In other business, the board did the following:
- Approved increases to the 2024-25 fees and admissions, including lunch at $4.15 per adult; general admission $7 per adult; fall season pass at $49 per adult or $68 per family; winter season pass $63 per adult or $93 per family; and all-season pass at $80 per adult or $110 per family.
- Accepted a gasoline bid from Luetgers Oil Company, Inc. The bid is 6 cents off the posted price at the pump. Superintendent Gregg Parks explained that, due to Northwinds Gas Station’s temporary closure, Luetgers was the only remaining bidder.
- Accept a letter of resignation from agriculture/science teacher Brent Kondziolka.
- Rescinded an assistant volleyball coaching contract with Jordyn Lucas and approved the same contract with Hannah (Bliss) Schwartz.
- Approved an assistant cross-country coaching contract with Madysen Nelson.
- Approved a teaching contract with Griffin Chase for K-12 physical education.
- Approved Susan Zinkl, Jeff Mattson, Crystal Zachary and Kjera Gustafson as educational assistants.
- Removed credit card authorization for retired bookkeeper Kathy Edwards and gave authorization to benefit coordinator Theresa McBrady.
The next regular meeting is 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23 at the media center.
