Erik ten Hag believes Jadon Sancho could still be a Manchester United player after the transfer window closes, also revealing he did not want Scott McTominay to leave Old Trafford.

It is expected to be a busy transfer deadline day with Sancho’s future one of the biggest deals hanging in the balance with Chelsea in talks to sign the winger.

Juventus are also keen to sign Sancho who was left out of the United squad for the opening two games of the season.

Sancho reportedly asked to leave United after being overlooked on the opening day of the season against Fulham but as things stand, ten Hag expects to still have him as part of his squad this season.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool, ten Hag said of Sancho: ‘He is a player in our squad and we are happy with him.

‘We need a good squad, we need depth. We have to play many games until January. After the break we play every third day so we need options.’

Asked if he will stay, ten Hag added: ‘As I know, yeah’.

McTominay meanwhile will join Napoli in a £25million deal. The Scotland international has been a reliable source of late goals during the Dutchman’s reign and is one of the club’s prized academy graduates, having joined the club at five years old.

Ten Hag admitted he was eager to keep McTominay this season, a player who has ‘United in his veins’.

But the Dutchman explained Profit and Sustainability rules imposed on Premier League sides have forced the club into action.

‘I’m very happy for him and for us, but it’s mixed [feelings] because I would have preferred not to lose him. He has Manchester United in his veins.

‘He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years. But unfortunately, it’s the rules.

‘You have to discuss the rules to do sells and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value.

‘It’s not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it’s a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us.’
