Three ways to liven up your kids’ bedrooms without breaking the bank

YOU don’t need to be an interior designer to turn your child’s bedroom into a bright and playful space.

A few easy touches can transform their room to reflect their interests and personality on a small budget.

Try these . . .

WONDERWALL: You can pay an arm and a leg for an artist to create a bespoke wall mural for your child.

But you can do it yourself with some of these cheat options.

A rainbow is easy to create and looks great over features, such as a fireplace.

First, draw the outline with a pencil, using a ruler for straight parts.

Paint each strand with masking tape on either side and wait for it to dry before moving on to the next part.

Use tester pots for the colours.

Or try creating personal touches with the help of a stencil.

Choose your child’s favourite animal or object such as butterflies, stars and feathers with Hobbycraft’s range that starts from £4.

Hold in place with masking tape and use tester pots or leftover paint if you have any lying around.

Wall stickers are an even easier way to add character.

Prices start from £3.99 at B&Q for a range of designs.

LIGHT UP: Twinkling fairy lights make children’s bedrooms feel magical.

String lights start from £1.50 at Flying Tiger and there are plenty of options to choose from.

Hang with adhesive wall hooks out of reach from kids.

Revamp an old ceiling lampshade by sticking coloured pom poms around the bottom edge — a pack is £1 at The Works.

BED DOWN: You may find your child is more willing to get into bed with a canopy over the top.

Or you can hang one over some cushions to give them somewhere to hide away and play.

If you’re feeling hands-on, it is not too tricky to create your own, especially if you have any spare fine mesh curtains.

Follow an online tutorial for instructions.

Or a simple white design is £10 from Ikea.
