Nobel Prize Background

The Nobel Prizes were established by Swedish inventor and philanthropist Alfred Nobel, who outlined in his will the institutions responsible for awarding the prizes. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences grants the prizes in Physics and Chemistry, the Karolinska Institutet awards the prize in Physiology or Medicine, and the Swedish Academy awards the Literature prize. The Nobel Peace Prize is decided by a committee of five persons elected by the Norwegian Parliament.

Nobel Week and Ceremony

The Nobel Prizes are awarded during the Nobel Week, which ends with the Nobel Prize ceremony on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The ceremony takes place in Stockholm for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, and Literature, while the Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo.

Nobel Statistics and Medals

Since 1901, the Nobel Prizes and the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences have been awarded 621 times to over 1,000 individuals and organizations. Each laureate receives a gold medal featuring an image of Alfred Nobel. The reverse side of the medal varies depending on the awarding institution. The Nobel Prize diplomas are also unique works of art, with the literature diploma traditionally written on parchment, using techniques similar to those employed by medieval illustrators.
