Channel Islands—A little rain fell on Wheels & Waves at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum on Sunday, October 6, but that didn’t dampen the car lovers’ spirits, who enjoyed coffee, donuts, and good times.
THE all-new show featured lots of classic rides, a little music mixed in, and plenty of stories about classic car owners pursuing their passion.
Fireball Tim Lawrence led the effort and said the people who didn’t mind the weather were treated to a plethora of great cars.
“I would say that 80 percent of the cars are new today,” he said. “The nice thing is that people in Simi Valley came out and said it was boiling, so we turned up the air conditioning, so it’s nice and cool here.”
He said the show featured rad rods, an Impala that is a show winner, and Johnny Martinez’s Pickup Truck.
“He’s a pinstriper,” Lawrence said. “We have new and classic Corvettes, Woodies, JDM Cars, Muscle Cars, classic Cadillacs, a little bit of everything.”
He enjoys people who bring their cars, their pieces of art.
“They’re enjoying themselves, and we have more donuts and coffee than we can handle,” he said. “We’re percolating.”
He added DJ David Doktor joined the party, “which is cool.”
Channel Islands Maritime Museum Executive Director Doug Riffenburgh said Wheels & Waves benefits everyone.
“We’re having an event that engages the community and is also good for the Museum,” he said. “One of our objectives at the Maritime Museum is to be a hub for the community. This kind of event brings people together and raises awareness of what the Maritime Museum has to offer. I met Fireball through the Mullin and Murphy Auto Museums. We met at our Father’s Day car show event and collaborated on starting a coffee and cars event here.”
He said the Channel Islands Maritime Museum always has new exhibits.
“We have two brand new art exhibits, and we have a permanent collection that is really amazing and consists of masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age that represent the genesis of maritime painting. We have world-class art, ship models, and rotating local exhibits of artists and photographers that we’re really proud of.”

DJ Dr. David Docktor loves Lawrence and is happy to be part of Wheels & Waves.
“I’m trying to keep the genre where everybody likes it,” he said. “My DJ business is a fun thing; I don’t make a lot of money; it’s a passion.”

Tommy Scalera, Car Show Safari founder, loves being part of Wheels & Waves, the first Sunday of every month at Channel Islands Maritime Museum.
“I’m really happy with the turnout even though it’s a little rainy and overcast,” he said. “We’re giving out free Hot Wheels, coffee, and donuts. “Fireball and I work together; this is a collaborative effort.”
He owns a 06 Mustang GT Convertible, his primary car, and a 94 Roadmaster Wagon, which was on display at the show.
“I recently had a 197 El Dorado Convertible, red with a white top, and a 1962 triple black Thunderbird Convertible,” he said.

“People can send in pictures about their car, and we’ll publish it,” Scalera said.
Robert Knight brought his 1931 Model A dressed up for Halloween from Simi Valley, with a small block Chevy engine from a C-10.
“It’s been on the road for about three years,” he said. “I built this car, the frame, suspension, chopped it, everything. It took me about two years.”
He called it the ultimate cruising car.
“It attracts attention,” he said.
Lawrence said he has a TV show coming out called Interior Chinatown.
“That’s been in the works for the past couple of years,” he said. “We’re doing the Die Cast Supercar event in Las Vegas this February.”
