During his speech, Eminem got straight to the point, saying, “I don’t think anyone wants an America where people are worried about retribution of what people will do if you make your opinion known. I think Vice President Harris supports a future for this country where these freedoms and many others will be protected and upheld.”
He also shared his personal connection to the event, “I’m here tonight for a couple of important reasons. As most of you know, the city of Detroit and the whole state of Michigan mean a lot to me, and going into this election, the spotlight is on us more than ever, and I think it’s important to use your voice, so I’m encouraging everybody to get out and vote, please.”
After Eminem’s powerful message, Obama took to the stage with the iconic Lose Yourself playing in the background. In a playful moment, Obama joked, “I thought Eminem was going to perform, and I was going to jump out. Love me some Eminem,” which had the crowd laughing and cheering.
The rally wasn’t just about Eminem and Obama though. It was a major event for the campaign, featuring speeches from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, and Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin.Eminem’s support for the Democratic Party is no secret. Back in 2020, he threw his weight behind the Biden-Harris ticket with a campaign ad featuring Lose Yourself. And in 2017, during his freestyle at the BET Hip Hop Awards, he took aim at Donald Trump, calling him a “racist.” Just last year, he made headlines again by asking GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy to stop using his music at rallies.During the rally, Obama and other Democratic leaders also took a few shots at Trump, especially after he recently referred to Detroit as “developing.” Governor Whitmer wasn’t having it, responding sharply, “He called Detroit a failure and a mess, proving he ain’t firing on all cylinders. He doesn’t have a clue what he’s talking about. Keep Detroit out of his mouth.”
With Eminem rallying the crowd and Bruce Springsteen joining upcoming campaign events in Georgia and Pennsylvania, it’s clear the Democrats are pulling out all the stops as they head into the final stretch.
