Manchester United’s former stars including Wayne Rooney have been ‘hammering’ the current side in their private Whatsapp chat, Rio Ferdinand has revealed.
Ruben Amorim’s side currently sit 12th in the Premier League table amid a woeful 2024-25 campaign.
While there have been some impressive performances on the road up against old rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool, there have been woeful results elsewhere, particularly at home where they have lost four of their last six in the league.
United legends have watched on horror as United have lurched from one disaster to another with Ferdinand revealing the current malaise is constantly a hot topic among one of club’s best ever sides.
Rooney, Edwin van der Sar, Jonny Evans, Nani, Anderson and Ferdinand were part of the squad that won the Champions League and Premier League double in 2008 with Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverly later joining the squad that would win United’s last league title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast with guest Ella Toone, Ferdinand revealed how the old boys group have been picking apart the current side during games.
‘It’s just hammering the United team,’ said Ferdinand, showing his phone to United women’s star Toone. ‘Look, lads are just hammering them through the game.
‘Wazza, I think, was the last person who spoke in there. It’s called Band of Brothers. It’s the 2008-2010 team.
‘You’ve got the younger lads like Tom Cleverley, Danny Welbeck, and there’s Nani and Anderson. You know who’s joined recently? Edwin van der Sar. I think he’s going to delete himself soon because the chat ain’t for him.
‘Who else is in there? Jonny Evans is in there who’s currently playing. Some of the stuff that goes on: Patrice Evra gets mullered, hammered all the time. We hammer each other.
‘Because you know, lads, sometimes you don’t speak. We’ve been on an amazing journey together and then you all part ways and go separately. We’ve got all this technology now, you’ve got to use it.’
United picked up a valuable victory on the road against Fulham on Sunday.
They end their Europa League campaign away to Steaua Bucharest on Thursday night before entertaining Crystal Palace back at Old Trafford on Sunday.
