Does another MBM count as half-time reading?
“There’s something of the Angeball about Kompany’s Bavarians, with constant overloads in attack and one-on-on defending,” says Kári Tulinius. “On the one hand, this demonstrates how effective this kind of high risk football can be with greater resources, on the other, the domination feels brittle. Mind you, I felt the same way about Flick’s Bayern and they won six trophies in one season.”
Half-time: Celtic 0-1 Bayern Munich
So much hard work from Celtic but one moment of quality has put Bayern ahead.
GOAL! Olise picks the ball up on the right and jinks inside, leaving Taylor unable to follow and pings his shot into the top corner from 18 yards.
GOAL! Celtic 0-1 Bayern Munich (Olise, 45)
A THUNDEROUS STRIKE!
43 mins: Down the other end, Bayern win a corner when it should be a goal kick. A tough two minutes for the lads with flags. Johnston heads it behind for a another corner.
Kane is lurking at the back post at the second corner and earns some space but heads wide.
41 mins: Idah thinks he’s won a corner but the assistant referee incorrectly says no, earning the ire of the home fans.
Simon McMahon says: “Celtic totally dominated Bayern for the first 30 seconds, which, if Brendan Rodgers is looking for positives at half time, is something I suppose.”
39 mins: Maeda whips in a decent looking cross but Upamecano reads the danger and clears. Celtic are putting in the hard yards here but they are yet to create a decent chance (except the disallowed goal).
37 mins: Kimmich swings in a free-kick from the left flank, it flicks off a Bayern head but Upamecano thinks a corner is coming his way, so leaves it to go out of play. The Bayern centre-back now regrets that decision.
35 mins: Hatate plays a loose pass in his defensive third and Bayern intercept. Celtic just about recover and clear, but they are certainly under the pump.
33 mins: Sane chips a cross to Kane at the back post and he looks set to score but his header is superbly saved by Schmeichel. I should add that it would not have counted as Kane was offside.
Celtic hanging on here.
31 mins: Kane and Musiala combine, allowing the latter to break into the box but he takes a poor touch at the crucial moment and Schmeichel gathers.
Moments later it Sane gets the wrong side of the Celtic defence but cannot control the chip over the top and Schmeichel is once again out quickly.
29 mins: Celtic are following Rodgers’ plan to the letter, ensuring they’re are defensively in the right place at every second.
27 mins: Celtic do their best to pass it out from the back but Bayern are all over them. The Scottish side are working their little socks off to stay in this.
25 mins: Celtic have the full backing of their fans. Whenever they win the ball back, it brings a roar from the crowd.
23 mins: Kane has his first chance of the match, firing a shot from a tight angle but Trusty’s outstretched leg blocks the effort.
Celtic break quickly down the right and it looks they will earn a decent opportunity after fine work from Kuhn and Engels but Bayern recover to clear.
21 mins: After keeping things quiet, Celtic are looking to turn the Bayern defence, hitting the flanks where they are putting the full-backs under pressure.
19 mins: Kirk emails to say Bayern have to wear their away kit because Uefa deemed the printing on the home shirts to be unreadable. Sounds novel. More here.
17 mins: Celtic have barely been out of their own half since the opening couple of minutes. They really need to concentrate to keep Bayern out here.
Idah does drive down the left flank and thinks he’s earned a corner but the referee has as different opinion.
15 mins: Kane whips the ball into the box from the left and Schmeichel punches clear.
Olise then does the same from the other side but Johnston reads the danger and heads behind before Kane has a chance.
13 mins: Olise and Kane play an exaggerated one-two, allowing the former Reading man a shot on goal but it is straight at the goalkeeper from 10 yards or so.
11 mins: Guerreiro bundles his way into the box after a pass from Musiala, it looks like the full-back could reach the ball first and have a chance, but Schmeichel is out quickly to claim.
9 mins: A Bayern corner is just about cleared by Celtic but Upamecano has a chance from the edge of the box, only to volley it well over. It is very much all Bayern at the moment.
7 mins: Bayern are in their away kit when it would seem their red home number would be fine. The needless wearing of away kits irks me.
The German are biding their time by the looks of it. They are knocking it side to side, looking to move Celtic around and find a gap.
5 mins: Olise has a dig from the edge of the box but it is easily blocked.
Bayern are settling and are enjoying plenty of early possession.
3 mins: Well, this should be a fun match based on the opening 25 seconds.
NO GOAL! Celtic 0-0 Bayern Munich
1 min: WHAT A START! Kuhn cuts in from the right and takes aim from 20 yards after 25 seconds but it goes through the legs of Idah and into the net. Celtic Park erupts but it turns out Idah is in an offside position.
Kick-off
Peep! Peep! Peep! Here we go!
The players exit the tunnel to a wall of noise.
The lights are down and the scarves are up at Celtic Park as “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is belted out.
Justin Kavanagh emails: “Great photo of Rod! He’s certainly got the gladrags on tonight, but does that bandage on his right fist suggest he’s already had some handbags? If so, it probably won’t be the last we’ll see at Celtic Park tonight in what should be a quite tasty match. Don’t spare the Rod, Bhoys.”
The main plan for Celtic here is to keep it tight early on against one of the most exciting front fours in Europe. You do not get many Musiala-type players in the Scottish Premiership.
Rod’s “had a couple of drinks”.
TNT have got Rod Stewart pitchside. Can’t wait to see where this goes …
WhoScored have kindly previewed this game for us.
A 1-0 win over Young Boys in their penultimate group game guaranteed Celtic’s spot in the playoff stage of the Champions League. However, they could not have been given a tougher test in the knockout round. Bayern Munich are unbeaten in their last 13 matches against Scottish sides in Europe; the last Scottish team to beat them were Hearts in the Uefa Cup in 1989.
In truth, Bayern should have qualified automatically for the last 16. They scored 20 goals in the group stage (only Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund scored more) and they had more shots (185) and shots on target (69) than any other team. Bayern were let down by their away form in the group stage, winning just one of their four matches on the road.
Celtic Park will be rocking well before kickoff on Wednesday night and the team will need their fans. Daizen Maeda is back after suspension and Jota’s return is a boost for Celtic in the wake of Kyogo Furuhashi’s move to Rennes.
If Everton v Liverpool is more your thing, Niall McVeigh has you covered.
The atmosphere at Celtic Park will be key tonight.

Preamble
Famously, some smarty pants at ITV once tweeted ‘Bye bye Celtic’ after they were drawn in the Champions League to face Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow in the group stage. Neil Lennon did not take it well and rubbed it into the face of the social media scamp by leading the Scottish side through to the knockouts, including a famous win over Barcelona.
It was rumoured that Lennon stuck in the tweet in the dressing room to use it as inspiration, giving two fingers to the London-based broadcaster. “It was a cheap shot really,” Lennon said of the tweet. “It was born out of ignorance.”
Once again, from the outside it looks like Celtic have a very difficult Champions League task in front of them. Bayern Munich are in town in this playoff novelty and there will be a second leg in Germany next week. The odds are against them but Celtic will, once again, be very eager to prove any doubters wrong.
