Air India unveils first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft as part of major fleet overhaul

Air India has unveiled its first retrofitted narrowbody aircraft, VT-EXN, in what the airline has termed a major step in its transformation.

This A320neo aircraft, which was part of the 27 narrowbody planes acquired during Air India’s takeover by the Tata Group in 2022, has undergone a complete retrofit, introducing a new cabin configuration and modern amenities.

The retrofitting process, which began last year, aligns with Air India’s broader efforts to revamp its fleet.

As part of the airline’s $400 million retrofit program announced by the Tata Group, the aircraft features a refreshed cabin with new seats, carpets, curtains, and improved cabin ambience.

The three-class configuration, which includes Business, Premium Economy, and Economy seats, is designed to provide a more comfortable and modern flying experience for passengers, Air India said in the press release on Monday.

VT-EXN is the first of the 27 A320neos to undergo this extensive retrofit, with all 27 planes scheduled to be upgraded by the third quarter of 2025.

These retrofitted aircraft will operate on both domestic routes and short-haul international flights, joining 14 newly inducted A320neos that offer similar amenities and configurations.

The retrofit program includes the installation of over 3,500 new Economy Class seats, more than 600 Premium Economy seats, and 200 Business Class seats. The refitted aircraft is also equipped with features such as portable electronic device holders, USB ports, and a soothing interior ambiance. Moreover, new carpets, curtains, upholstery, and cabin panels reinforce the updated Air India branding, said the airline.

This retrofit initiative is not limited to narrowbody aircraft. The airline also plans to upgrade its fleet of widebody aircraft, with 40 B787 and B777 planes scheduled for a makeover. The first B787 aircraft will be sent for retrofit next month.
