The goalkeeper was forced off during Cameroon’s clash with Mauritius on Friday with a lower back injury.
Onana pulled out of Cameroon’s squad for Tuesday’s clash against Libya and he returned to the UK on Sunday night.
The former Inter Milan ace is likely to return to Carrington on Tuesday for initial tests on the injury, and a full assessment.
United take on Everton on Sunday and Onana’s understudy, Altay Bayindir, is yet to make his debut for the club since joining from Fenerbahce.
The Turkish international featured in his country’s win against Germany on Friday, but it would be a major risk to give him his debut against the Toffees on Sunday.
But ESPN claim that is unlikely, as Onana is confident he will be fit in time for the trip.
Everton will be in action for the first time since they were docked ten points by the Premier League for financial breaches.
United beat the Toffees at Goodison Park last season through goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Antony.
