ASTON VILLA’S perfect start to the Champions League has been spoiled by a schoolboy error.
Tyrone Mings’ unbelievable lapse in concentration cost Villa all three points on their trip to face Club Brugge.
It took a penalty to seperate the two teams, but it was probably the most avoidable penalty in Champions League history.
Tyrone Mings found himself the biggest Villain around when he inexplicably PICKED UP THE BALL inside his own box.
The former England defender thought that Emi Martinez was kicking him the ball for him to take a goal kick and so decided to pick it up and place it back down.
Instead, Martinez had actually passed him the ball and restarted the match, prompting a VAR check for handball by the referee.
The official then had no choice but to award the penalty, which was dispatched by Hans Vanaken.
That was the only goal of the match, despite Unai Emery‘s best efforts of bringing on super sub Jhon Duran in the hopes of another late goal from the striker.
Instead it’ll be a long flight back to Birmingham for Villa’s men, one that will give Mings plenty of time to think about what he’s done.
