Did road work get tar on your car? Here’s how you can get a free car wash. – NJ.com

Drivers who got tar on their cars while driving on Route 22 in Union County this month may be able to get a free car wash.

Since the $7.3 million paving project began on the highway in August, residents have been complaining that tar and other construction materials are damaging their cars.

The federally-funded highway resurfacing project spans 6 miles of Route 22 westbound between Union Township and Scotch Plains and 2.5 miles eastbound between Springfield and Union Township.

Asphalt Paving Systems, the company overseeing the work, is taking responsibility for issues some drivers have had and will cover the cost of cleaning affected cars, according to officials.

“The contractor had a problem with the aggregate/sand mixture and is taking responsibility,” Springfield Township officials said in a notice about the issue earlier this month.

Construction is expected to be completed this month, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Residents whose cars were damaged while driving on the highway during the construction period can contact Asphalt Paving Systems at 609-561-4161, ext. 214, for a free cleaning.
