DWP and supplier ‘lifeline support’ ahead of April energy bill rises

As Ofgem confirms a rise in energy bills of around £9.25 more per month from April—an average yearly increase of £111—individuals have mere weeks before feeling the financial pinch.

Money Wellness has pointed out eight types of assistance available to those struggling to keep up with energy payments as summer looms, including Department for Work and Pensions benefits, aid from suppliers and little-known grants.

Sebrina McCullough, director of external relations at Money Wellness, issued a stark warning: “We’re passed the tipping point when it comes to energy arrears. It’s going to be a worrying year ahead for millions of households just about making ends meet. Don’t struggle alone – make full use of the support that’s available.”

Energy supplier support

Energy suppliers can often extend a lifeline to those in a bind. Vulnerable customers might have access to repayment schemes, payment breaks, or in dire circumstances, complete debt forgiveness.

Some providers may offer grants that can either clear existing debts or finance the acquisition of more energy-efficient appliances.

DWP

Several government schemes and benefits are aimed at those finding it difficult to pay their energy bills amidst the ongoing energy crisis. These include Winter Fuel Payments, Cold Weather Payments, and the Warm Home Discount.

Interestingly, individuals who use oxygen at home may qualify for an additional rebate on their electricity costs. More details about these benefits, eligibility requirements, and claim processes can be found on Gov.uk.

Household Support Fund

This scheme is set to conclude on March 31, following its extension by the government in September. The type of support offered and eligibility varies across local authorities, but the government has advised that it should be used to assist the most vulnerable in communities with essential needs like energy bills.

Grants

Various charities and organisations offer grants based on personal circumstances. For instance, certain charities provide assistance to individuals with specific health conditions or professions such as retail workers or veterans.

Turn2Us provides a useful eligibility checker to see if you might be missing out on any grants you’re eligible for.

Fuel Vouchers

Those using a prepayment meter may feel more constrained as not all the same support is available to them. However, they could be eligible for fuel vouchers provided by local councils, food banks, and Citizens Advice.

Priority Services Register

Eligible households, such as those with young children, pregnant or disabled people or pensioners may qualify for this register. It offers a range of help like advanced notice on power cuts, priority service in emergencies and some support from your energy provider.

You’ll need to check with your provider if they consider you eligible for the register.

Home energy improvements

A number of grants are available to help people improve their home’s energy efficiency. This may not have an immediate impact on their debt but will help to cut their bills in the long run and potentially give them a warmer, more efficient home.

Benefits

Finally, Money Wellness’ last tip urged people to use a benefit checker to ensure they aren’t missing out on government help. An estimated £23billion in support goes unclaimed each year.
