Dyson V15s Detect Submarine review: Clever new way to clean comes at a price

Dyson’s latest vacuum really does clean up when it comes to your floors

We were hugely sceptical about the new V15s Detect Submarine but Dyson’s clever cleaner really does sparkle. This water-filled vacuum mops up muck in a flash plus it instantly gets rid of spills without any fuss. We splashed red wine, coffee, tea and juice all over our floors with all those liquids vanishing in the blink of an eye.

The vacuum itself is also really good thanks to dust monitoring, auto power features and decent battery life. That all makes the Submarine a one-stop shop for those weekly chores.

It’s not totally perfect though. It’s pretty weighty, there’s a slightly odd water collection chamber (which is open so you have to be careful when emptying it) and the price is eye-wateringly high – at £799 it’s £100 more than the standard V15 Detect.

You might also be perfectly happy using your trusted £10 mop and bucket to wash up instead.

But, if the Submarine has caught your eye and you’ve £799 in the bank this new Dysin machine is a dream to clean.

Dyson V15s Detect Submarine full review

Dyson remains a firm favourite for anyone wanting a new vacuum and now the UK firm is back with something a little different. The latest V15s Detect Submarine offers a neat bonus as it not only vacuums floors but also washes them as well.

It’s a handy extra that cuts down on the need for an old-fashioned mop and bucket.

But the big question is if the V15s Detect Submarine is worth its £799 asking price?

Set-up and design

Open the box and you’ll find everything you need to perform the weekly chores. The V15s Detect Submarine comes with numerous attachments to get deep inside every nook and cranny plus there’s now the bonus of the additional wet roller head attachment as well.

Once you’ve removed everything from the eco-friendly cardboard you simply attach the main extension pole to the vacuum and add your desired cleaning head. The machine even comes with some charge in the battery which meant we were able to start attacking our floors instantly.

The Dyson’s V15s Detect Submarine looks super snazzy thanks to its industrial but colourful design and it’s also small enough to tuck away in the cupboard under the stairs.

To keep things neat and tidy there’s a supplied docking station which means you can hang it up when not in use.

The only thing worth noting is the weight as it is quite heavy and you have to constantly hold it up to perform your clean. If you’ve lost strength in your arms for any reason it’s worth a trip to the shops to make sure you can cope with using it for long periods of vacuuming.

Wet cleaning

The biggest new feature of the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine is its new wet roller head attachment. This now allows you to wash the floors as well as vacuum them.

We were a little sceptical at first as what’s really wrong with a £10 mop and bucket?

However, the more we’ve used it the more we really like having this feature. Not only does it deep clean the kitchen and bathroom floors but it can also make spills vanish in seconds.

That means no more reaching for endless kitchen roll after you’ve dropped your Friday evening glass of wine. Simply start the Detect Submarine up and roll it over the mess. It’s super impressive and makes cleaning a breeze.

A durable plate inside the head also extracts contaminated water from the wet roller and deposits it into a separate waste-water tray. This also means mess isn’t spread all over the floors as you clean with everything mopped up.

Our only criticism is probably the price as you have to pay £100 more for this technology

It’s easy to empty and refill with water although it is weird that the waste-water tray is so open – it means you have to be a little careful when accessing it and tipping the muck down the sink.

Another nice feature of the wet clean is Dyson’s eight-water jet system which is evenly spaced along the roller. This is able to release precisely 18ml water every minute to wash floors evenly without leaving excess wetness.

It works really well and you never find too much of the wet stuff has been spread all over your lino.

There’s also a 300ml clean water tank which we found easily coped with cleaning a large kitchen and hallway without needing a refill.

Our only criticism is probably the price as you have to pay £100 more for this technology. Yes, it’s really handy, but you could buy a lot of mop and buckets for the same price.

Dry cleaning

Just like the previous Dyson V15s Detect, the Submarine is excellent at cleaning the rest of your home. Not only is it super powerful – thanks to the Hyperdymium motor – but also features Dyson’s clever Dust Sensing technology which means it’s able to boost the power when needed.

That not only means more dust is busted but also makes the battery last a little longer.

As the vacuum hits mucky areas you can hear the engine go into overdrive as it picks up all the excess grime. There is also a HEPA filtration system which Dyson promises will catch 99.99% of particles as small as 0.1 microns.

A small screen on the back of the vacuum also reveals exactly how much dust you’ve captured during your clean. This screen can also be used to see battery life, manually pump up the power and check if the filters need a wash.

Inside the box, you get a number of useful cleaning heads including the wet roller, Digital Motorbar for getting deep into carpets and Dyson’s neat Fluffy Optic cleaner head that has laser light so you can see what dust you’ve missed.

There are also other useful attachments for crevice cleaning and vacuuming smaller areas of your home or car.

You don’t get a spare battery sadly and buying one costs an extra £109. The V15s Detect Submarine easily cleaned our four-bedroom home without running flat and simple charging should hopefully mean you never run low on juice.

Price

Like most of Dyson’s cleaners, the V15s Detect Submarine isn’t cheap. It will set you back a whopping £799 – that’s £100 more than the standard model without wet cleaning.

There’s no question that this is a very good vacuum cleaner. You just need to work out if you really need it or could save money by buying a £10 mop and bucket.

V15s Detect Submarine: Final verdict

Dyson’s latest vacuum really does clean up when it comes to your floors. Not only does it feature the usual high-powered suction for getting rid of dust, hair and crumbs but it also gives things a welcome wash as well.

That’s all thanks to the Dyson V15s Detect Submarine’s wet roller head attachment that you fill with water to transform this machine into a hi-tech mop and bucket.

Clever water jets make sure your floors get a scrub but things don’t become over-saturated.

As well as deep cleaning, this vacuum also sucks up spills without any fuss – perfect for the accident-prone who are constantly dropping bottles of water and cups of tea.

It’s a really neat idea that works incredibly well. It also makes the Dyson’s V15s Detect Submarine a one-stop shop for the weekly chores.

There are a couple of gripes including no closed container for the waste water which means you need to take extra care when emptying it. At £799 it’s also £100 more than the already pricy Dyson V15s Detect model.

That said, if you want to wash your floors and ditch that unsightly mop and bucket Dyson’s latest device is a very polished product.
