Alan Shearer reckons Liverpool might try to tempt Harry Kane back to the Premier League this summer to become the centrepiece of Arne Slot’s attack.
Kane left the Premier League behind in 2023 as he made the big-money move to German giants Bayern Munich.
And while the England captain didn’t end his first season with any silverware, the 31-year-old is on course to win the Bundesliga this season, with Bayern also into the Champions League quarter-finals.
With 21 goals and seven assists in 24 league appearances this campaign, Kane remains one of the most lethal goalscorers in Europe.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have enjoyed a similarly impressive league campaign, with Slot’s side the runaway leaders by 12 points over Arsenal.

But the Reds will have to move on the side in the summer, particularly with Trent Alexander-Arnold set to leave for Real Madrid.
The future of talismanic forward Mohamed Salah is also still up in the air, with the Egyptian still yet to agree terms on a contract extension which would extend his stay at Anfield beyond this summer.

Profligate striker Darwin Nunez could also be facing an exit from Liverpool this summer, and Shearer believes the Reds could do worse than try to tempt Kane back to his homeland to provide an immediate upgrade to Slot’s striking options.
‘Harry Kane is a machine and he’ll always score goals,’ the former Newcastle and England striker told Betfair.
‘Despite his age, if you provide him with chances or balls into the box, he’ll find a way to put the ball in the back of the net and that’s the sign of a great goalscorer.

‘Harry has always done it for England. I know there’s been one or two debates about last summer but if he’s got players who are prepared to run beyond him then that opens up space for him and if you get to the byline like Declan Rice did and whip a ball across like that, he’ll score goals. He’s a great goalscorer and has been for so many years now.
‘Liverpool will be looking for a centre-forward in the summer, I don’t doubt that and Harry Kane would be a great option for them because of the size of the club and he’ll score goals.
How would Harry Kane fit in Liverpool’s set-up?
It’s no secret that Harry Kane is not able to get about the pitch like he once could, with questions over his declining pace a constant talking point during England’s run to the Euro 2024 final last year.
But in Arne Slot’s more measured Liverpool side, those declining attributes may not be off too much concern.
At Bayern, the Englishman has thrived with pacey wingers either side of him, allowing him to drop deep to pick up the ball and spray passes in behind to onrushing teammates.
And in Cody Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, Kane would surely have no shortage of willing runners to repeat a similar trick.
Liverpool, however, have often been wary of signing ageing players whose best days are perhaps behind them. The ongoing contract wranglings with Salah and Virgil van Dijk are proof that even their best players aren’t guaranteed a future at the club beyond a certain age.
The Reds, therefore, might look to younger, more versatile options to take Arne Slot’s side forward. Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, both younger and with great potential, have been linked with a move to Merseyside in recent weeks and perhaps fit the club’s transfer ethos better.

‘Whether Harry decides to stay in Germany or he decides to come back to the Premier League, he’ll have options.’
Asked what Kane’s return to the Premier League would mean for his goalscoring record, Shearer added: ‘I’ve always said that if he comes back to the Premier League then he’ll have a really, really good chance of breaking my record.
‘My Premier League record won’t last forever. I don’t know how long I’ve been at the top of the charts but it’s been a great privilege to be there when you look at the number of top-quality players there.
‘The record will go one day and when it does go, and if it’s to Harry, he knows I’d be the first to congratulate him and shake his hand because if anyone deserves it, he does.’
While Liverpool may find it hard to tempt Kane away from Bayern this summer, the Merseyside club could sign the Englishman for a cut-price fee in the winter, with reports in Germany suggesting a £54million release clause in his contract become active then.
Asked about the clause in February, Kane told Sky Germany: ‘I don’t want to talk about that. What I can say is that I am very happy at FC Bayern.’
Kane’s current deal at Bayern is set to expire in the summer of 2027.
