A WATERFALL in Europe has been compared to the world-famous Niagara Falls.
Europe is home to some amazing natural sights, including Rhine Falls – a fairly well-known waterfall in Switzerland.
Rhine Falls, also known as Rheinfall, is the largest plain waterfall in Europe.
While the waterfall only stands at 23m in height, it spans 150m in width.
Located in northern Switzerland, on the country’s border with Germany, the waterfall attracts thousands of holidaymakers every year.
Not only can tourists marvel at the waterfall from one of the visitor information points, but there are plenty of other ways to witness the natural site, including a viewing platform tucked inside a 1000-year-old castle.
Set on a rocky hilltop overlooking the waterfall, Schloss Laufen (the castle) is home to its very own viewing platform, which is said to have the best views.
In addition to the viewing platform, the castle is also home to an exhibition, where visitors can learn more about the history of the building, and a restaurant.
Entry tickets to the viewing platform cost 5 CHF (£4.60) for a full-paying adult.
Holidaymakers can also book a boat tour of the waterfall.
There are several boat tours in operation, each of varying lengths and featuring different activities.
For example, on the Yellow Line tour, holidaymakers can climb onto Middlerock – a large rock that lies in the heart of the waterfall.
Passengers will be given 20 minutes on the rock to take photos, and they also have the opportunity to climb 100 steps to another viewing platform right next to Rhine Falls.
While the boat trips are closed for the winter season, they are set to resume in March 2024.
There are plenty of other activities for holidaymakers who are visiting the waterfall too, including RheinFell Adventure Park.
The tree-top adventure park features 15 different courses, as well as a cable car that offers further views of the waterfall.
Other attractions include a miniature model of Rhine Falls at Smallstones, as well as Rhyality – an Immersive Art Hall.
There’s also a museum next to the European waterfall, which delves into the site’s history.
Entry to the area surrounding Rhine Falls is free, but visitors will need to pay for boat trips, access to viewing platforms, and other activities.
In recent years, holidaymakers have been comparing Rhine Falls to Niagara Falls on TripAdvisor.
One person wrote: “It definitely is the mini Niagara Falls.”
Someone else added: “Niagara Falls is bigger, but it’s not as spectacular.”
A third person wrote: “After Niagara Falls, Rhine Falls is something out of this world. It was amazing and even you can touch the water from a platform.”
However, other visitors thought the pair couldn’t be compared.
One person wrote: “It is different than Niagara, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.”
While another said: It’s not as grand as Niagara Falls, but it’s still much better than what we saw on the TV. It’s a very relaxing place to visit and highly recommended.”
Both British Airways and easyJet operate direct flights from UK cities like London and Bristol to Zurich in Switzerland, with flights starting at £22 for a one-way ticket.
From Zurich, it’s a 35-minute drive to Rhine Falls.
The water attraction can also be accessed via a 50-minute train from Zurich.
Meanwhile, this waterfall can be found in a cave that was used as a filming location in a Batman movie.
And this UK waterfall is bigger than Niagara Falls.
