Food always tastes better in good company | Brief letters

Like Grace Dent I, too, eat alone, but unlike her I don’t enjoy it (‘A self-care date night’: gen Z and millennials embrace the pleasures of dining alone, 25 October). Sharing a meal with good company is a pleasure. It helps keep us sane in a time of increasing isolationism. I enjoy cooking, but not having others to share my efforts over challenging conversation makes it dull fare.

Re overcrowding at London Euston (Letters, 23 October), I fail to understand why we don’t adopt the model used for long-distance journeys in France. Passengers should be unable to board a train without a seat reservation. This would reduce the dash for seats and overcrowding.

Approaching my 85th birthday, I recently subjected myself to a mature driver review, offered by IAM RoadSmart. It involved driving for an hour on urban roads, country roads and motorways with a qualified IAM assessor. Judi Fendley (Letters, 27 October) might find it worth her while to spend £85 on a similar experience. A positive assessment would be reassuring, and a negative one might be salutary.

Labelling food bought from shops is all very well (Report, 28 October), but what is vitally needed is strict regulation of fast-food outlets. Every day in term time, I see Bexleyheath Broadway crowded after school with hundreds of schoolchildren eating from chicken shops and McDonald’s. Most, sadly, are overweight. This sight is replicated all over the country.
