Freeview boost as new TV channel launches earlier than you might have expected

The Christmas period is still months away but that’s not stopping Freeview from getting in the yuletide spirit. A popular channel is returning to this free-to-view platform that will offer endless festive content throughout the next few months. GREAT! Christmas will appear on TVs across the UK from tomorrow, September 5, with shows being beamed to screens all day and night until January.

If it’s not too early for some Christmas films then you’ll find this service on Channel 52 – it replaces GREAT! Romance which is currently in that slot.

“The home of Christmas – from September to December! Underneath our tree it’s fit to burst with great Christmas films, ranging from Christmas classics to hidden festive treats,” the team at GREAT! explained.

“And with the biggest collection of Christmas movies on TV, we have enough festive content to keep you in the festive spirit right up to the big day. Together we’ll have a great Christmas.”

You shouldn’t need to retune your telly with the update happening automatically.

GREAT! Christmas is also launching on Sky, Virgin Media and Freely as well so users of those platforms will also be able to join in the festive fun. It currently appears that Freesat users will miss out.

News of this update comes as Sky has also announced the launch of a new app on its Glass and Stream platforms.

It’s just been confirmed that the long-waited U service has now officially launched which means homes can access hours of popular shows, entertainment, documentaries and drama right from their Sky devices.

“The U app, formerly UKTV, is launching on both Sky Glass and Stream,” Sky explained in an update. “It’s free to use and features thousands of hours of entertainment from TV channels U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W and U&Yesterday.”

You’ll find U in the app section of your Sky Glass and Stream box – there’s no word yet on a Sky Q launch.
