Graham Potter a top candidate for surprise manager job seven months after Chelsea sacking but it makes a lot of sense

GRAHAM POTTER is in the running to become the next manager of the Sweden national team.

The former Chelsea boss has been earmarked for the role after ex-boss Sweden boss Janne Anderson stepped down after the nation failed to qualify for Euro 2024.

Potter, 48, is familiar with the Swedish game from his time at Ostersunds, which also backs up him knowing Swedish.

And now he may be on course to head back to the country in charge of the national team following a poor spell at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking to TV4, Sweden FA’s new general secretary Andrea Mllerberg confirmed Potter is in the running for the job.

He said: “You can say this: The list that is on names and that I have been sent to me or that I am reading… it is clear that he is part of that list.

“We’ll see what we filter down and who is interested in this role. You probably have to be passionate about wanting to be the national team coach, especially given that it is different from club football.

“You may have to be ready with certain parts.”

Sweden currently sit third in their qualifying group for Euro 2024 after winning just two of their six qualifiers so far.

Potter had a remarkable journey with the Swedish club, located just outside of the Arctic circle.

Having taken over the club when it was in the fourth-tier in 2011 he secured promotion in his first season in charge.

By the time 2015 rolled around, the Englishman had guided Ostersunds to Sweden’s top tier.

They then won the Svenska Cupen in 2017 which prompted a European adventure where they would take on Arsenal.

Massive names such as Galatasaray and PAOK well fell in route to the Europa League group stage where they then finished second in a group including Athletic Bilbao, Hertha Berlin and Zorya Luhansk.

They then faced the Gunners in the Round of 32, losing 3-0 at home before securing a historic 2-1 win at the Emirates.

Potter was then poached by Swansea before Brighton came calling.

At the Seagulls he grew a strong reputation for attractive football on limited resources.

Under new ownership Chelsea then took a chance on him, but things did not work out in a thoroughly disappointing season before he was relieved of his duties.

SunSport revealed Potter has been earmarked as a candidate to replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United should the Dutchman be sacked.

He has also been linked with a host of European giants including Napoli, Lyon and Rangers but has thus far remained without a new job.
