A HUGE gas field has been discovered that could meet Britain’s fuel needs for ten years, an energy firm claims.
Initial findings are set to be announced at a conference for the industry later this month.
The event will hear exploiting the Lincolnshire site could add up to £112billion to the economy.
Tens of thousands of jobs would be created if it is given the go-ahead.
The firm, Egdon Resources, will give more detail about the gas field, centred on the market town of Gainsborough.
It lies under a lightly populated area but extends towards Sheffield and Doncaster.
The whole site is possibly larger than Shell’s controversial Jackdaw development in the North Sea.
Drilling could soon take place which will trigger the debate about fracking and create a Cabinet split.
PM Sir Keir Starmer is attempting to navigate between the needs for Net Zero and economic growth.
The Government would have to end the ban on fracking and also allow new oil and gas licensing — which it presently rules out.
Mark Abbott, boss of Egdon, said: “The land take would be far smaller than for solar farms and the energy produced would be far greater.”
