A GERMAN tourist has spent the past 32 years holidaying in Hull.
Rainer Schmidt, 56, fell in love with the port city during a business trip in July 1991.
Since then he has returned every year for his jollies except 2006 and a couple during the pandemic.
Rainer, from northern Bavaria, said he instantly felt a connection for the city and the locals.
He added: “I found it interesting and was impressed by the quiet area and the hotel’s nice room, but I really fell in love with the English breakfast.
British sausages are not the best, so I make sure to swap them for extra bacon but otherwise, it’s great.”
The transport firm worker went on: “I find northern people so friendly and warm — it reminds me of home.
“The beautiful countryside and people are what makes Hull great.
“I’ve made great friends.”
One is Chris Lawson, the owner of the guesthouse where Rainer first stayed.
This time, Chris arranged for him to meet Lord Mayor Kalvin Neal, who gave him a letter thanking him for his loyalty to the city.
Chris said: “Rainer’s an honorary citizen in my eyes.”
