Sightseeing and exploring new adventurous activities make for important factors of tourism. But sometimes certain bizarre phenomena catch the attention of visitors like the Island of Dead Dolls in Mexico, Temples of Rats – Deshnok in India, and the Sewer Museum in Paris. If you think nothing else can top this list, then you’ll be shocked to learn that watching volcanic eruptions is a popular tourism activity in Iceland. Yes, you heard it right. It seems common for daring tourists to assemble together and watch the dangerous sight of hot lava bubbling out of volcanic mountains. Now, viral Reddit footage of the bizarre sightseeing phenomenon has left social media shocked, with many calling it a “Dumb way to die.”
The visuals take viewers to the epicentre of a volcanic eruption with about 30 people lined below. Donning puffed jackets, the tourists face the direction of the bubbling lava with some even capturing the moment on their mobile devices. The hot red magma sends globs of semi-liquid out in the air as it also flows down the mountain streams. If the footage is anything to go by, it seems the tourists are standing at a compromising location risking their safety if things begin to go south.
Take a look at the video here:
The video has left a barrage of Reddit concerned. While some are blatantly calling the tourism activity “stupid”, many confess they’d never try to attempt this in a billion years. A user commented, “What the hell. I would not be anywhere near that close.” Another agreed, “That’s getting a little too sporty for my taste.”

A section of Redditors joined the discussion to explain how the tourists only appear to be standing close to the lava when in reality they’re about half a mile away from the location. A social media user cautioned, “This camera perspective is misleading. All these ppl are standing up on a hill far away from the volcano column.” Then there were those who couldn’t fathom this activity to be even safe. A user wrote, “I don’t even think the person recording is safe, let alone all the people they’re recording.” Another enquired, “Is it really safe to be so up close to that thing? Even forgetting the volcanic eruption, the gasses like sulfur and carbon monoxide and whatnot, I’ve heard stories where people get unconscious inhaling the air and then just die.”
Would you dare to try this?
