iPhone 16 release date uncovered? When to expect next major Apple upgrade

It’s almost September and that means one thing on the yearly tech calendar – Apple is about to launch all-new iPhones. The US technology giant always unleashes its next batch of devices during this month (apart from in 2020 during the Covid crisis) and we don’t expect 2024 to be any different. Although Apple always keeps its products and launch dates under wraps it’s almost certain that four smartphones will be unveiled next month including an iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.

So when will they be unveiled?

Apple won’t announce a launch date until much nearer the time but Express.co.uk has taken a look back in time at when previous keynotes have taken place and we think Apple could hold its iPhone 16 event on Tuesday, September 10.

As you can see from the list of launches below, the unveilings usually happen in the second week of September and always on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

iPhone 6s launch: Wednesday, September 9, 2015

iPhone 7 launch: Wednesday, September 7, 2016

iPhone X launch: Tuesday, September 12, 2017

iPhone XS launch: Wednesday, September 12, 2018

iPhone 11 launch: Tuesday, September 10, 2019

iPhone 12 launch: October 2020 (Covid lockdown)

iPhone 13 launch: Tuesday, September 14, 2021

iPhone 14 launch: Wednesday, September 7, 2022

iPhone 15 launch: Tuesday, September 12, 2023

If we look at the upcoming calendar, Tuesday, September 10 looks most likely as, for obvious reasons, it’s highly unlikely Apple would launch products on Wednesday, September 11.

So what will be new on these devices?

There are plenty of rumours flying around the web that the iPhone 16 range will get faster processors, improved cameras, longer battery life and faster charging.

Some reports suggest that Apple may increase the size of the displays, make the devices thinner and improve the iPhone Pro’s Action Button to make it more useful.

Right now the Action Button can be pressed to launch a specific setting – such as the Torch – but the iPhone 16 might add swipe gestures as well allowing it to do more things at once.

Expect some all-new colours to be added to the lineup as well.

One thing that is certain is all of the new devices will get access to Apple Intelligence. This update was announced back in June and it brings an updated Siri with the ability to pull data from all your apps so you can ask more detailed questions and get accurate answers. An example is asking your iPhone what time you need to pick someone up from the airport, and your iPhone will scan your emails, texts, and other data – privately – to find the correct answer, including scanning up-to-date flight times to account for delays.

With September now just weeks away, it should be an exciting time for Apple fans so watch this space.
