K-pop group Twice member Chaeyoung apologises after posting picture wearing T-shirt with Swastika

Chaeyoung, a member of the globally successful K-pop group Twice, has expressed regret for wearing a T-shirt with a swastika design.

The 23-year-old had shared a photo of herself wearing the shirt featuring an image of Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious donning the logo on her Instagram account, which has 8.6 million followers. However, she soon deleted the post and posted an apology instead.

Chaeyoung stated that she had not fully comprehended the significance of the tilted swastika on the T-shirt and apologised for any distress caused. She pledged to be more vigilant in the future to avoid a similar incident.

The K-pop industry has been involved in several controversies over the use of Nazi logos and symbols.

In 2018, the management of BTS, the world’s biggest K-pop group, apologised after a member was photographed wearing a hat that featured a swastika and eagle logo, originally worn by SS officers. Another member was seen wearing a T-shirt with a picture of an atomic mushroom cloud, celebrating Korean liberation from Japanese rule in 1945.

Since their debut in 2015, Twice, the nine-member group that Chaeyoung belongs to, has achieved tremendous success beyond South Korea, with four of their albums reaching the US Top 10.
