The Law Society has announced that a special general meeting initiated over the new TA6 conveyancing form will take place on Tuesday 23 July. This follows receipt of a requisition from 100 solicitors, as required under the Society’s bye-laws.
Following the release of the latest TA6 in March, campaigning organisation the Property Lawyers Action Group called for the SGM to debate and vote on a motion of no confidence in the Society’s ability to represent members who undertake conveyancing.
Law Society chief executive Ian Jeffery said today: ’It is disappointing that PLAG has felt it necessary to take this step. However, the SGM is an opportunity for members to discuss with us the future of the home buying and selling process and how the Society can best represent its members, as changes are made over time to that process, to enhance the experience of consumers.
’There will be a vote on the no confidence motion if one is required on the day, but in any event, we will listen to and carefully consider the views of our members, expressed at the meeting and more widely.’
Last week the Society postponed compulsory implementation of the updated TA6 to allow for six months’ consultation.
The SGM will take place in-person at the Chancery Lane HQ at 2pm and online. Only Society members can attend and vote. To register, members must complete the registration form no later than 9am on Monday 15 July.
