LETTER: When you need help, speak up – Park Rapids Enterprise

From the days of the past, we have all learned that sometimes we need to reach out in times of need. In doing so, we open ourselves up to emotions from within and judgment from the outside. We become vulnerable and scared.

Recently, I have found myself in one such instance.

I have recently been divorced from my lifelong sweetheart, and my life had been flipped upside down. I have had a few jobs since and was able to keep my head just barely above water.

After a year or so, I succumbed to the thought that I needed more. The choices were either a Buddhist monastery or a surf village, and soon I found myself on the shores of the Indian Ocean. There, in Jeffrey’s Bay, I allowed the world to steal away my pain, one wave at a time.

Upon my return home, I found myself with no home per say, just a couch here and there, when I finally gave in and asked for help.

Immediately after my request, one of the local churches and the Hubbard County Veterans Service Office put me up in a hotel, and soon, another church joined the parade.

All in all, Calvary Lutheran and Hubbard United Methodist saved my life. Aaron Majors and Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans were there with them the whole time.

I cannot thank these people and organizations enough for the help they provided me and the new lease on life I now have.

So, as the sun sets on another day, when you need help, speak up and say it. Be humble, polite and be real. Allow others to know how you feel, for help comes in mysterious ways to brighten up even our darkest of days!
