Arne Slot has joked how ‘money’ played a role in Liverpool retaining the services of Mohamed Salah. The Reds announced earlier today that the winger has penned a two-year extension at Anfield.
Salah had reached the final few months of his contract prior to putting pen to paper on a bumper new deal, with Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold similarly on the cusp of becoming free agents as it stands.
Salah was heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly showing an interest in the forward too, but has decided to remain on Merseyside.
Asked about the role that he played, as manager, in convincing his No. 11 to stay put, Slot explained: “I am part of the process but I don’t deserve the compliments, it’s Mo, his agent and then FSG, Richard (Hughes), they all put the effort, which means money!”
After laughing at his remark, he added: “But also effort. What it might tell you is that it is not only a good season now we want more next season and Mo is convinced we can do so. So that is positive for us.”
Slot also discussed Van Dijk’s contract situation after the centre-back hinted earlier this week that he was closing in on a new deal with the club, speaking openly about how there has been ‘progress’ in negotiations. Reports have claimed that the Liverpool skipper is set to also sign a two-year contract extension.
However, Slot remained coy on the matter and assessed his recent performances instead. He said: “We talk about contracts if they are signed, so we talk about Mo. I am very happy with Virgil this season he has been incredible for us. Maybe some moments lately where he can do better but the other 89 minutes, such an important player. Hopefully, he can do the same and be our leader again.”
Liverpool host West Ham this weekend, and they will be keen to bounce back to winning ways after suffering only their second defeat of the season against Fulham last week. Slot confirmed that Alisson will be fit to start against Graham Potter’s side, with Conor Bradley also available after being ruled out with injury previously.
