Manchester City 8-0 Salford City: FA Cup third round – as it happened

Key events

Jamie Jackson was at the Etihad for us. I’ll leave you with his report – goodnight.

Full time: Manchester City 8-0 Salford City

The last touch of the game is a fine save from Matty Young to deny Ilkay Gundogan a ninth goal. Manchester City breezed into the fourth round, with James McAtee scoring a hat-trick and Jeremy Doku getting a couple. Divin Mubama and Nico O’Reilly scored their first goals for the club, while Jack Grealish got his first of the season.

89 min Man City have had nine shots on target and scored eight, which reinforces the feeling that the scoreline is slightly unrepresentative of the game. City have been ruthless.

86 min: Salford substitution Will Wright, aged 16, comes on for Hakeeb Adelakun.

The Salford corner, stemming from that Taylor effort, leads to a volley into the side netting from McAleny. Good effort.

87 min Ederson denies John Taylor a consolation goal, deflecting his shot into the side netting.

85 min Gundogan skips into the area, looking for a ninth, and is denied by a really good challenge from Till.

GOAL! Manchester City 8-0 Salford City (McAtee 81)

A hat-trick for James McAtee! City kept the ball for an age until Grealish’s low cross was turned in by the stretching McAtee. That’s a lovely moment for a very talented (and Salford-born) young player.

78 min Tilt makes a fine block from Gundogan’s shot. City look in the mood for another goal or two.

77 min Salford almost get a consolation goal when Stockton, found by McAleny, shoots not far wide from 20 yards.

73 min: Man City substitution Mateo Kovacic replaces the outstanding Jeremy Doku.

GOAL! Man City 7-0 Salford City (McAtee 72)

And another. Foden’s mistimed shot from 20 yards is controlled by McAtee and slipped past Young, a neat finish for his second goal.

70 min: Double substitution for Salford Conor McAleny and Cole Stockton replace Matty Lund and Kylian Kouassi.

GOAL! Man City 6-0 Salford (Doku 69 pen)

Jeremy Doku gets his second, sitting the keeper down before passing the ball into the bottom right corner. He’s been terrific today.

68 min: Penalty to Man City! Foden finds Doku, whose shot is handled by Tilt – another clear penalty.

66 min A fine move by Manchester City ends with Shephard making an important tackle on Foden in the area. The resulting corner is cleared as far as McAtee, who swishes the bouncing ball just over the bar from 25 yards. Nice effort.

63 min Adelakun, Salford’s best attacker tonight, drags a low shot past the far post from 20 yards.

GOAL! Man City 5-0 Salford (McAtee 62)

Another really classy goal from Manchester City. Nunes plays a fine pass to release Doku on the right, he crosses early to near post and McAtee sweeps the ball first-time across the keeper. That’s a lovely goal, McAtee’s first at the Etihad.

60 min Curtis Tilt is booked for taking a shortcut through the back of Mubama.

58 min: Double substitution for Salford Jon Taylor and Ryan Watson replace Haji Mnoga and Ossama Ashley.

55 min: City substitution Phil Foden replaces Savinho.

53 min A really good cross from Shephard on the right is turned behind by Akanji. The scoreline feels a bit harsh on Salford, who have had their moments in attack and defended well for the most part. City have been ruthless in the other parts.

52 min Adelakun thumps a shot over from the left side of the box. Not a great effort.

GOAL! Man City 4-0 Salford (Grealish 49 pen)

Grealish sends the keeper the wrong way for his first goal of the season.

48 min: Penalty to Man City! A horrible mess at the back from Salford. Tilt’s backpass to Young was short and collected by Mubama. He gave the ball to Grealish, who twisted past Ashley and had his legs taken from under him.

Half-time substitution Manchester City have brought on Manuel Akanji for Nathan Ake in defence.

Half-time reading

Half time: Manchester City 3-0 Salford City

Jeremy Doku was the star of a comfortable first half for Manchester City. He scored the first and made the third for Nico O’Reilly, with Divin Mubama scoring on his debut inbetween. Kylian Kouassi missed an excellent chance for Salford at 2-0, but the third goal has finished the game.

45 min Three minutes of added time.

GOAL! Man City 3-0 Salford (O’Reilly 44)

Game over. The excellent Doku scoots past Mnoga in the area and pushes the ball back to O’Reilly, who sweeps it into the far corner with his left foot. That’s a very nice finish.

41 min: Great chance for Salford! Lund is fouled 25 yards from goal by Grealish. The free-kick is a fair way to the left of centre, probably too far for a shot. Garbutt plays it short to Adelakun, who curls a gorgeous cross into the six-yard box. Kouassi sees it late and miscontrols the ball in front of goal.

Moments later Berkoe slashes wide from Lund’s lay-off. The first chance was the big one.

40 min Savinho goes past Garbutt and then goes over. It looked like a free-kick but the referee disagreed.

39 min And now Savinho curls over from the edge of the D after being teed up by McAtee.

38 min Mnoga blocks a stinging shot from Doku, who has been a regular threat on the City left.

36 min “Apparently, City have been linked with Matty Young, and could be interested in buying him from Sunderland,” says Matt Dony. “I think they should be looking further forward in Salford’s team. A rush and a push and Lund is theirs.”

Was MAKE IT STOP a Smiths song?

35 min This is certainly Salford’s best spell of the game. Kouassi slaloms elegantly into the area from the lot and drives a low shot that is comfortably saved by the diving Ederson. The better option might have been to find Mnoga to his right.

32 min Salford have enjoyed a bit more possession in the last five minutes, albeit largely in the middle third of the pitch.
