Meerut South RRTS Station commences passenger operations, bringing city closer to Delhi

The Meerut South RRTS station commenced passenger operations on Sunday at around 2 pm, linking Meerut more closely to Delhi. This new addition means 42 km of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor is now functional, including nine stations from Sahibabad in Ghaziabad to Meerut South.

According to officials, the full 82-km long corridor from Delhi to Meerut is slated to be operational by June 2025. By the end of this year, when it reaches the center of Meerut city, commuters will be able to travel from Meerut to Sahibabad in Ghaziabad in just 45 minutes, a substantial reduction from the current bus travel time of over two hours.

The new RRTS line will significantly impact life in the region by enabling people to live in Meerut and work in Delhi, Noida, or Ghaziabad. This development is also expected to boost the real estate market, particularly in the previously underdeveloped areas east of Ghaziabad.

The rapid rail system, inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on October 20 and named Namo Bharat, has expanded passenger operations to cover all of Ghaziabad and the outskirts of Meerut within a year. This expansion includes 50% of the planned Delhi-Meerut line, with completion projected by June 2025.

Before the opening of Meerut South, a 34-km section was already in operation in Ghaziabad, including stations at Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai, Duhai Depot, Muradnagar, Modinagar South, and Modinagar North. The addition of Meerut South extends the operational line by another 8 km.

Meerut South will serve as a critical access point to the rest of Meerut city and the district, including areas such as Mohiuddinpur, Bhudbaral, Bahadurpur, Aminagar, Chhajjupur, Kharkhoda, Kadarabad, and nearby localities. In recent years, the Delhi-Meerut expressway has also brought the two cities closer, but this benefit has largely been limited to those who drive and can afford the associated costs. The new rapid rail service offers a faster and more affordable alternative. The one-way fare from Sahibabad to Meerut South is Rs 110.

Pending sections include a 14 km stretch from Jangpura to Sahibabad and a 23.6 km portion from Meerut South to Modipuram. Construction in Delhi is at an advanced stage, and only a 2 km elevated patch remains to be completed in Meerut.
