Mumbai's Malad to be developed with BKC-type affordable housing, tourist spots, amusement park: Details

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been given the responsibility of planning and developing a vast stretch of land along the west coast of Malad. The area spans approximately 1,387 hectares (about 3,427 acres) and is intended to be developed on the lines of the successful Bandra-Kurla Complex, a TOI report stated.

This land is a combination of six villages – Aksa, Daravli, Erangal, Madh, Malvani, and Marve – and falls within the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ-I). CRZ-I areas are recognized as environmentally sensitive, but in this case, 936 hectares (about 2,300 acres) or 67 per cent of the land has been designated as a special development zone (SDZ) for socially-driven development.

The focus of this SDZ will be on promoting affordable housing, creating public open spaces, and providing the necessary social infrastructure. Additionally, the SDZ may also include institutional development, film production facilities, areas for tourism growth, and amusement parks.

By appointing MMRDA as the special planning authority for this coastal area, the government aims to ensure systematic and sustainable development that benefits the local community. The MMRDA will play a crucial role in shaping the future of this region, keeping in mind the need for affordable housing and improved social amenities.

“We are committed to developing this area in a way that enhances the quality of life for residents while also preserving the ecological balance. Our focus will be on creating a well-planned and inclusive space that caters to the diverse needs of the community,” MMRDA spokesperson told TOI.
