New iPhone could be one of Apple’s biggest upgrades in years

The iPhone 15 series is the latest smartphone line up from Apple with four models released to tempt you to upgrade your current phone to a shiny new handset, but we are only a few months away from the iPhone 16 range being launched – and a new leak suggests we are in for some big changes.

Emphasis on the word ‘big’ – according to longtime reliable Apple leaker Sonny Dickson, Apple is making some size changes to the iPhone 16 series. In the below post on X, Dickson posted alleged dummy units of Apple’s top secret new iPhones, which are essentially mock up models of what the phones will look and feel like.

They reportedly show, from left to right, sizes for the iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus, with their corresponding screen sizes indicated above them as 6.9 inches, 6.3 inches, 6.1 inches, and 6.7 inches. If accurate, it means Apple is increasing the screen size of both its Pro iPhones.

Currently, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have 6.1 inch screens while the larger iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max have 6.7 inch screens. The same screen sizes applied across the iPhone 14 range, too. If Apple boosts the size of the Pros, it will be selling four different display sizes of phone, which could affect which model you decide to buy – if you like small phones, you might be forced to buy the regular iPhone 16 just to avoid a larger screen, even if you want the extra camera lens and specs you’re likely to find on the iPhone 16 Pro.

If the iPhone 16 Pro Max ends up at 6.9 inches, it will be an enormous phone and the largest iPhone ever. Apple built the iPhone 15 using titanium which made it lighter than previous Pro iPhones made from stainless steel, but even a titanium 16 Pro Max at that size will be a certified pocket-buster.

Aside from the size change, the mock up phones also back up the rumour that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will have vertically stacked dual cameras in a camera bump reminiscent of the iPhone X from 2017, which carried through to the iPhone XS before the iPhone 11 and 12 had a larger square bump with vertical cameras, and then the iPhone 13, 14, and 15 all had a diagonal dual camera square.

They say things go in cycles, and so Apple might be returning to the old design – the company usually changes the design of its iPhone each year to encourage people to upgrade.

However, by stacking the cameras vertically, it is thought that Apple may be ready to bring the ability to shoot Spatial Video to the regular iPhone 16 models. Spatial Video is the company’s special video format that can currently only be shot on iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, and can only be viewed in virtual reality on Apple’s Vision Pro mixed reality headset – that’s currently only on sale in the US.

There are no more clues to be found from the leak, but we still expect Apple to be building up to its regular September iPhone launch.
