Newcastle REJECT shock loan transfer offer from Atletico Madrid for Callum Wilson but FFP could force them to sell

NEWCASTLE have rejected a loan bid from Atletico Madrid for striker Callum Wilson, according to reports.

However, Financial Fair Play restrictions could force the Toon to sell the England forward if the Spanish giants return with a permanent offer.

European clubs are testing Newcastle‘s resolve as it is widely known they need to offload players before they can bring anyone in.

This is because they are at their financial limit with regards to the rolling three-year period monitored by FFP regulations.

Bayern Munich have already been linked with a move for right-back Kieran Tripper.

And The Mail are now reporting Atletico have seen a loan proposal for Wilson, 31, rejected.

The former Bournemouth man, who has 18 months left on his contract at St James’ Park, is expected to return from a calf problem before the end of the month.

A move to Atletico could entice him as he would still be able to play for them in the Champions League, with Newcastle already having been dumped out in the group stage.

Diego Simeone‘s men take on Inter Milan in the last-16, with the first leg in Italy on February 20.

But Atletico have FFP concerns of their own and may not be able to afford a permanent deal for Wilson in the January window.

Newcastle will not sell their No9 on the cheap as Alexander Isak is Eddie Howe’s only other recognised striker.

The Magpies are also aware they would need to replace Wilson if he were to depart in the mid-season window.

It is understood Atletico will be joined by other clubs in pursuing Wilson before the end of the month.

He joined Newcastle in 2020 and has scored 46 goals in 102 appearances for the North East outfit.
