News updates from October 29: UK lenders warn of turmoil after car finance court ruling; Cloud growth boosts Google’s earnings


Earnings season is in full swing, with Alphabet the biggest name reporting today. As the election campaign reaches its final stages, both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will be speaking.

Alphabet: The Google parent will kick-off this week’s Big Tech earnings. Analysts expect growth in search to decelerate and possible headwinds in YouTube ad spending.

Other companies: McDonald’s reports this morning and could provide an update following the hit it took last week after its burgers were linked to an E. coli outbreak. DR Horton, Phillips 66, Crocs and JetBlue will also report before the bell. AMD, Visa, Mondelez, Chipotle, Snap and Reddit will report after the market closes.

Job openings: US government data is expected to show that job openings fell slightly to 8mn in September.

Consumer confidence: The Conference Board is expected to report its index tracking US consumer confidence ticked up to a reading of 99.5 in October from 98.7 in September.

Property prices: The Case-Shiller 20-City index is forecast to show the annual rate of growth in US home prices slowed to 5.1 per cent in August, from 5.9 per cent in July.

US election: Vice-president Kamala Harris will make her “closing argument” at the Ellipse in Washington DC, the site of Donald Trump’s infamous January 6 2021 speech. The former president will deliver remarks to the press in Palm Beach, Florida, and host a rally in Pennsylvania.
