Olympics 2024 gold rush began for team USA on Saturday. Caeleb Dressel collected his eighth career Olympic gold medal when he anchored the U.S. men to a second successive 4×100 metres freestyle title at the Paris Olympics on Saturday. This was team USA’s first gold medal in this year’s event. Australia took silver and Italy the bronze with China missing out on the medals in fourth place. The quartet of Jack Alexy, Chris Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong and Dressel came home in 3 minutes 09.28 seconds with Australia taking silver in 3:10.35 and Italy bronze in 3:10.70 in the last final of a raucous opening night at the La Defense Arena.. But they had their work cut after the opening leg with Chinese 100 metre world record holder Pan Zhanle putting in a scorching two laps.

Matt King and Ryan Held swam in the morning heats but were switched out in favour of Alexy and Giuliano for the final. King and Held will also receive gold medals.

The dominant Americans hauled themselves back into contention with Dressel powering them to the finish line. Kyle Chalmers put in a cracking final leg to hand Australia silver, with his 46.59 the fastest split of any swimmer.
