Paco Rabanne: Spanish-born fashion icon, perfumer dies at age of 88 in France

Fashion designer and perfumer Paco Rabanne has passed away at the age of 88 at his home in Portsall in France. His death was confirmed by Puig, the parent company of his brands, which stated that Rabanne had left a lasting impact on generations with his innovative vision in fashion, and his legacy will endure.

Paco Rabanne rose to fame in the 1960s and retired from the fashion industry in 1999, becoming a private person. In 2011, Puig, based in Barcelona, revitalized Rabanne’s dormant fashion business, beginning with Indian designer Manish Arora. Since 2013, Frenchman Julien Dossena, previously with Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga, has been heading the fashion house and is a well-known figure in Paris.

Paco Rabanne is best known for his metallic designs, but his fashion career started with a collection of plastic pieces presented in 1966, called “12 Unwearable Dresses in Contemporary Materials“. The collection caused controversy among French fashion critics, but established Rabanne’s unique vision and set the tone for his future designs. He later moved on to using metal, paper, buttons, and fur, dressing renowned celebrities such as Mia Farrow, Audrey Hepburn, and Jane Fonda.

Although his designs were unconventional, Rabanne considered himself a classic creator, but his use of alternative and industrial materials earned him the reputation of being a futuristic fashion visionary, rather than a classic one.

Paco Rabanne, who was known not only for his fashion designs but also for his innovative visions and interests in the occult, was a true visionary in the fashion world. In the 1970s, he predicted the role of the internet in retail and marketing, and was one of the first designers to launch a fragrance online in the mid-1990s, using the then-new e-commerce site CyberShop.
