PITTSBURGH, Pa. —
Pittsburgh International Airport is implementing ID facial recognition technology to help ensure safety for both staff and passengers.
What once was the TSA officer’s duty to compare an ID and authenticate it, will now have an extra security layer.
“It’s credential authentication technology,” Karen Keys-Turner, TSA federal security director, said. “It matches the face with the identification, and it also checks for security features on the identification media.”
With more than 2,500 variant ID media, the technology can instantly detect it to be fraudulent, expired, or good. And using biometrics, can instantly match your face.
But what happens if it detects something wrong?
“We resolve it in a number of different ways,” Keys-Turner said. “We may have to send somebody back to the ticket counter. Again, if it’s fraudulent ID, they may not be able to fly.”
And how will it affect timing?
“It takes about five seconds so; it does not add to the time for processing passengers,” Keys-Turner said.
Turner said passengers should not expect a difference in time with the new technology and to follow usual rules.
