The PM was chatting to customers on a visit to Yarm, North Yorks.
Today he flies to Rome for meetings with his Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni and Albania’s PM Edi Rama.
A migrant died in the Channel yesterday, with Downing Street calling it a “stark reminder” of just how dangerous the crossings are.
Sunak will probe Italy’s plan to send asylum seekers to Albania for processing, currently held up in the courts, at a meeting for all three leaders.
The UK already has a returns deal with Albania with more than 500 small boat migrants returned there.
The trilateral meeting comes after Mr Sunak survived a Commons vote over his plan to send migrants to Rwanda with the next legislative battle with rebels to be held in the New Year.
A second migrant was left in a critical condition when a boat sank in the English Channel just after midnight yesterday with 66 rescued and taken to safety.
The Home Secretary James Cleverly said the incident which took place five miles off the northern coast “horrific reminder of the people smugglers’ brutality”.
More than 29,000 migrants have arrived in the UK this year after crossing the Channel.
