RISHI Sunak last night unleashed a brutal takedown of Liz Truss and Matt Hancock at a glamorous black tie dinner for Westminster journalists.
In a savage speech at the Royal Horseguards Hotel, the PM laid into his predecessor for blaming the catastrophic mini-budget on everyone but herself and her favourite right wing think tank.
Mr Sunak said: “It has been quite the year in British politics.
“I think we’re almost a year to the day on from what we might I guess euphemistically call ‘the events that led to my becoming Prime Minister’.
“I’m glad to see actually that Liz Truss has been quietly reflecting. Not least on who’s to blame. The Treasury? Of course. Office for Budget Responsibility? Bank of England?
“In fact I can’t think of a (body) in British public life that hasn’t yet been blamed.
“Except perhaps the Institute for Economic Affairs.”
As journalists clinked Prosecco glasses and dined on burrata and roast chicken, the PM went in on Matt Hancock and his extremely cringeworthy social media posts.
He said: “Arguably looking back over this tumultuous year, no-one has had a busier year than Matt Hancock.
“It’s hard to keep up – I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.
“And that’s just one reason why I’m so proud to have introduced the Online Safety Bill.
“It is designed to prevent the spread of harmful, malicious and undignified content – just like a 44-year-old former health secretary lip syncing to a Barbie song on TikTok.”
The PM didn’t hold back as he threw shade at Boris Johnson and his top lieutenant and number one fan, ex-cabinet minister Nadine Dorries.
Ahead of the infamous “Tory-oke night” at Conservative Party Conference in Manchester, Mr Sunak quipped: “I’m excited about conference karaoke next week.
“I’ve heard on the grapevine that Nadine and Boris are doing Nothing Compares 2 U.
“Liz Truss is apparently covering Shaggy’s It Wasn’t Me.
“And I will be performing Elton John’s classic Tiny Dancer.”
The Westminster Correspondents’ Dinner is a highlight of the political calendar for journalists, ministers and MPs.
It recognises the vital work reporters, including in The Sun politics team, do to hold power to account and safeguard democracy.
Traditionally the PM of the day will deliver a no-holds-barred speech, poking fun at top political editors and, of course, politicians.
Mr Sunak arrived at last night’s event in a snazzy suit fitted with a black bow tie.
His wife Akshata wore a stylish long green dress.
Journalists and top politicians mingled in a brief “calm before the storm” moment, ahead of Tory conference on Sunday and Labour conference the following week.
